The HIV Institute Discovery Fund

Advancing HIV Science and Equity Amid Funding Challenges

At UC San Diego’s HIV Institute, we are steadfast in our mission to advance science and care in the fight against HIV. Through groundbreaking research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a deep commitment to community, we strive to end the HIV epidemic and improve health outcomes for all.

The Current Funding Landscape

Recent developments have introduced significant challenges to HIV/AIDS research funding. Substantial cuts to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are proposed, potentially reducing its discretionary budget by over 30%. This includes proposed reductions in funding for HIV/AIDS programs, which could impact research, prevention, and treatment efforts nationwide. Additionally, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has terminated funding for numerous HIV-related research grants. These cuts have raised concerns among scientists about the potential reversal of decades of progress in HIV prevention and treatment.

The Hub - Basic Needs Initiatives

An advocate, a supporter, a navigator and a trusted friend — the Hub Basic Needs Center is all of these and more for undergraduate and graduate students who need a helping hand at a critical time. The Hub offers a comprehensive support system, providing immediate crisis intervention services and linking students to long-term resources that support self-sufficiency.

Our goal is to ensure all students have enough to eat, a safe place to sleep and the capacity to focus on their education without undue financial stress.Equitably minimizing basic needs challenges allows all Tritons to flourish both academically and personally. Your gift to The Hub - Basic Needs Initiatives fund will help provide students with nutritious, no-cost food, temporary emergency housing, and/or financial crisis support, ensuring they have the resources to focus on their education.

Gifts of any size make a meaningful impact. Below are just a few examples of how your generosity and the collective support of the Triton community can help students facing basic needs challenges:

  • $50 could enable the Triton Food Pantry to provide 100 meals to students experiencing food security challenges.
  • $75 could provide diapers, baby wipes and other personal care items to a student with dependents for one month.
  • $100 could provide a student with a grocery card and/or triton cash to meet their urgent food security needs for one month.
  • Seven gifts of $250 could provide up to 30 days of on-campus emergency housing for a student facing unstable or unsafe living conditions.
  • Four gifts of $500 could fund a Basic Needs Emergency Grant, providing critical financial support to a student facing acute, unexpected hardships.

The UCSD Guardian

The UCSD Guardian, UC San Diego's premier, award-winning print publication, is asking for your support today.

For over 50 years, The Guardian has been a trusted source of transparent and investigative student journalism, serving both the UC San Diego and broader San Diego communities. Created and driven by students, our team of over 150 passionate journalists are dedicated to delivering diverse perspectives while adapting to the ever-evolving communications landscape.

As a student-led, independent news organization, we face challenges in maintaining our print publication. Limited resources have forced us to reduce our printing schedule, and without additional support we may no longer be able to produce the high-quality, transparent, ethical journalism that we aspire to. With your support, we can continue providing free access to our work, compensate our editors fairly, cover operational and printing costs and ensure that The Guardian can serve the Triton community.

Make a gift to the UCSD Guardian today to ensure the next generation of rigorous student journalism at UC San Diego.

We operate without a faculty advisor or formal journalism program, but we've made incredible strides through teamwork, innovation and dedication. This year alone, we've nearly doubled our staff, implemented new processes to improve our reporting, and expanded our reach to cover a broader range of stories.

We're committed to preserving journalism at UC San Diego, and with your help, we can continue to thrive. Join us in supporting the next generation of journalists by making a gift today!

Town & Gown Scholarship Current Fund

Town & Gown seeks to integrate and engage the local community in the life of UC San Diego, developing informed members who advocate for and strengthen our university through their support for student scholarships.

Town & Gown Scholarship awardees are selected on the basis of four criteria: a high grade point average (usually above 3.80), volunteer community involvement, a career goal that offers service to others, and high financial need. The Town & Gown Scholarship Committee reviews all qualified applications and conducts in-person interviews with the finalists. The one-year, one-time awards are $6,000 and typically awarded in May or June for the upcoming academic year.

One of the most gratifying qualities of Town & Gown is the opportunity to change aspiring students’ lives through the awarding of scholarships. Town & Gown scholars are exemplary members of the Triton family and represent the next generation of leaders, innovators and decision-makers. We continue to follow their careers with excitement and pride.

Please join us with a gift today to empower the next generation of scholars and changemakers.

Triathlon Team

The UC San Diego Triathlon Team was founded in 1998 and has grown to 50+ athletes. The team competes in Sprint and Olympic-distance races throughout the spring and summer against other schools in the West Coast Collegiate Triathlon Conference (WCCTC).

Historically, the Tritons have been extremely successful at the regional and national levels and we could not have done so without the foundation of so many who have come before us as well as the dedication of our student board and coaching staff.

We are also proud to host one of the most prestigious competitions in the sport every year, the Tritonman. While competition drives us, community is also very important to us and we strive to make the sport more accessible to the student body at large.

Triton Alumni and Welcome Center Fund

At the center of our campus, we are building the first-ever Triton Alumni and Welcome Center as a site for journeys home. A site for launching new Triton journeys.

Our grand vision is to create a space where stories begin, where your legacy is shared and where Tritons of all ages come together. The Triton Alumni and Welcome Center will feature a lounge, library, hoteling space and meeting rooms and other spaces for alumni to socialize, work and gather. It will also serve as a hub for introducing prospective students, families and visitors to UC San Diego. Together, these will provide a gathering place for the Triton community to contemplate, celebrate and nurture their network as they connect with faculty and staff, mentor students, honor UC San Diego’s history and plan for its future.

Triton Food Pantry

With 51% of undergraduate students experiencing some degree of food insecurity, the Triton community has established, and actively supports, a spectrum of food resources, including the Triton Food Pantry.

Each year, the Triton Food Pantry provides fresh produce, canned goods and other groceries to over 5,000 students across UC San Diego’s eight colleges and five graduate schools.

Our goals are to ensure that every student has enough energy to get through the day and that no student ever has to give up a single meal for any reason.

Both visible and discreet, the Triton Food Pantry not only provides undergraduate and graduate students a dignified way to access no-cost foods, but also serves as a gateway to the broader range of resources offered by The Hub Basic Needs Center.

Your gift today will help stock the pantry with nutritious, culturally reflective foods, providing students with the essential fuel they need to support their physical health, mental well-being, and academic success.
