Karen Calfas Polarek Knock Around Campership Endowment
Knock Around Camp (KA) is located on the UC San Diego campus and has served the children of students, staff and faculty for the past 35 years. As part of the Recreation department, Knock Around Camp is built upon our belief that environment dictates a child’s summer experience.
We strive to create a low pressure, high energy, positive environment where children are encouraged to create friendships and explore creativity. In each of our camps, children are introduced to a wide variety of activities designed to promote teamwork, self-esteem, leadership, cultural awareness and friendship.
What we will do with Giving Day donations:
Karen Calfas Polarek, executive director of student health and well-being, was a longtime mentor and friend of the KA. As a huge supporter of Knock Around, she oversaw its growth and evolution while serving as the assistant vice chancellor for student wellness. Her kindness, generosity, and inspiring nature is still greatly missed by all of us here at Knock Around Camp.
To honor Karen, and with the support of her family, we created the Karen Calfas Polarek Knock Around Campership Endowment to provide families in financial need the opportunity to attend summer camp.
Since Summer 2021, many kids and their families have benefited from the generosity of numerous donations. Our goal is to provide support for at least two more families each year, and with your help we know we can continue to build upon Karen’s KA legacy.
