UC San Diego Community Stations

The UC San Diego Community Stations are a network of field hubs located in disadvantaged neighborhoods on both sides of the San Diego–Tijuana border, designed for collaborative research, teaching and advocacy among university researchers and community-based nonprofit partners.

This project supporting the Hormiguitas Vivero (Little Ants Nursery) located in Los Laureles Canyon was conceived as a center for native plant conservation and economic empowerment for local women. The Community Stations team partnered with Hormiguitas Vivero to sustain the nursery, gradually reestablishing it as a hub for educational activity and community environmental participation, for UC San Diego students and local residents.

Your gift today helps increase the nursery's capacity, transforming it into the epicenter of native plant production, distribution and restoration of habitat and protected lands within Los Laureles Canyon, in collaboration with local communities.

Gifts will activate the new master plan, alongside a native plant catalogue. Upon meeting our goal, we are ready to begin construction. Renovations will include native plant production spaces, demonstration sites for ecological restoration across Los Laureles Canyon and spaces for community training and apprenticeships, supporting binational students working at the UC San Diego Community Stations.

Make a gift today and help empower economic opportunity and native plant conversation efforts!
